Educational Preparation
Typically, the INS role is assigned to a registered nurse with formal graduate-level education. Although a diploma-, associate’s-, or bachelor’s-prepared registered nurse will be called an informatics nurse (ANA, 2014), in practice, the job titles of nurses working within informatics tend to be a bit messy and are not uniformly applied across the board. This means that, in practice, nurses tend to continue to use their credentials and their job title in their signatures.
PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The Alliance of Nursing Informatics (ANI) brings together thousands of informatics nurses by bridging the various workgroups, committees, councils, or sections within them. It is a great starting point to find an organization local to you or that matches your interests. For example, some state nurse’s associations have councils specific to NI, such as the North Carolina Nurses Association’s Council on Nursing Informatics. Check out which meetings are most actively attended in your area, and join one.
The Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has an NI committee, taskforce, and subgroups. HIMSS also has an NI symposium each year at the annual HIMSS conference. The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is the academic association and has a nursing informatics working group (NIWG). Other professional organizations also have NI committees, subgroups, taskforces, or specialty assemblies, such as the Association for Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). A good starting point for more research is the ANI website’s listing of member organizations.
